Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to contact anyone before attending a meeting?
Our group has an open door policy. We welcome all guests. You are not required to make a reservation before coming.
How long may I attend as a guest?
As long as you want. We will begin to assign you roles once you join. While a guest, you may decide whether or not you would like to participate during our meeting.
Do I need to have ties with the University of California at Riverside to join your club?
Although we are affilliated with the University of California at Riverside, we welcome members from outside the university.
Who makes up your group?
A variety of faculty, staff, and undergraduate and graduate students from the UCR make up the core of our group. We also have a noticeable presence from outside the UCR campus.
Where are your meetings?
We meet in the Bannockburn i-105 at the princeton review at 3623 Canyon Crest Drive #i-105, Riverside, CA 92507.(near substation) every Thursday night at 6:30-7:30 PM.
How much does it cost to join?
We each pay every six months in continuing dues. Your initial dues will vary. The cost to join includes a one-time .24 fee to the International organization and there are no club dues. We prorate the semi-annual dues according to the month you join.
What are the requirements to join?
Nothing except a desire to improve your public speaking or leadership skills.
Are there other Toastmasters clubs around?
Sure there are. You can check the Toastmasters International web site (www.toastmasters.org) for a comprehensive listing of other clubs.
How have other people gotten over being afraid to speak?
While getting over your fear is a very personal journey, many of us calm our fears by facing them head on. This is a short process for some of us and much longer for others.
What is a typical meeting like?
We try to fit in a busy meeting in an hour. The Toastmaster opens each meeting with an inspiration, a joke, and a word of the day. Then, our two scheduled speakers treat us to prepared talks on subjects of their chosing. Table topics, which are short impromptu responses to a question, follow the speeches. Finally, we evaluate the speeches and the meeting before closing the meeting.
